Exploring microbiome datasets to understand microbe-microbe interactions and their impact on human health using experimental and bioinformatic approaches

I graduated in 2020 with a BSc in Microbiology from University of Liverpool, which sparked my interest in genomics and gastrointestinal infections. I followed this passion, pursing a PhD at the University of Liverpool funded by the Health Protection Research Unit in Gastrointestinal Infections, where I investigated the utility of long read metagenomics and Hi-C sequencing to resolve closely related organisms found within the gastrointestinal tract. As part of this I conducted a qualitative study, to understand the current infectious disease diagnostic landscape, and the practicalities of integrating metagenomics for routine clinical use as an infectious disease diagnostic.

In addition to my PhD, I have been part of a Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) project focusing on enhancing the accessibility of scientific research in pathogen genomics. The project engaged public contributors to identify opportunities for improving the communication and visualisation of whole genome sequencing data, as well as highlighted areas within the research process that could benefit from public input.

In 2024 I joined the Hall Lab as a Research Fellow to explore microbe-microbe interactions using experimental and bioinformatic approaches across several human microbiomes including the vaginal and gut microbiome and their impact on human health.
